Different Types Of Lowbed Trailers? What is low bed trailer?

What is a lowbed trailer?

Low bed trailer is a kind of semi-trailer that has a super low cargo platform, the platform is also called drop-deck. And the low bed part has no sidewalls. Rear-axle numbers could be 2-4 axles. Mainly specialized for transportation of crawler crane, excavator, crawler loader, bulldozer, railroad equipment, and other crawlers/tires equipment. Benefit from the low bed design, the trailer has high trafficability to go through bridge arc and tunnel, and lowers COG(center of gravity) of cargo.

Application of lowbed trailer

A standard 3-axle lowbed trailer can transport up to 40 tons. However, the load capacity can be increased by increasing the number of axles. The load capacity also depends on the type of axle. Some customers will use axles with a higher load capacity depending on the weight of the goods to be transported. In general, baputi factory can configure 13, 16, 18 and 20 ton axles according to the customer's transportation needs, so the trailer can be customized to meet your standards based on the cargo type requirements.

The lowbed trailer mainly comes in three types, for a wide range of tasks.

Fixed gooseneck (FGN):

allows a longer deck length and has the lightest weight. These are lower trailers than normal, with low-profile tires, usually with drop ramps in the rear to facilitate loading of equipment, but are not actually considered "lowboys". The neck is arched in such a way that, when lowered, it becomes a ramp, thus allowing the front tires of equipment to be pulled onto the deck.

The main advantage of the concave beam semi-trailer is high stability. The concave beam structure reduces the height of the center of gravity of the cargo, thus improving the stability during transportation. The trailer is usually used to carry heavy equipment, cylinders, wind turbine towers, chemical tanks and other heavy cargo. It is most suitable for use by logistics large cargo transportation companies.

Mechanically-detachable gooseneck (mechanical RGN or MRGN):

while usually lighter than the hydraulic detachable gooseneck, users sacrifice ease and speed of detaching. Used for long specialty hauls.

Mechanical folding gooseneck (MFGN): The deck folds down to ground level to provide a ramp for trailer loading.

Removable gooseneck semi-trailers are used to transport heavy equipment and machinery. When using a normal low-profile trailer, the heavy cargo is loaded from the rear machinery climbing ladder. However, when using a demountable gooseneck semi-trailer, the cargo is loaded from the front.

Since the gooseneck is detachable, heavy loads can be loaded from the front. A live gooseneck trailer provides the convenience of loading cargo from the front.

Hydraulic detachable gooseneck (hydraulic RGN or HRGN)):

fastest and easiest to detach, at the expense of weight and deck length. It is the most common and versatile of lowbed trailers; the gooseneck is detached using large hydraulic cylinders to raise and lower the trailer and a small cylinder shores the neck to the truck, removing the neck so a large piece of equipment can be driven over the front onto the deck of the trailer for transport. The hydraulics can be run from the truck auxiliary or from a pony motor mounted in the neck of the trailer.

Removable gooseneck trailers are generally equipped with four hydraulic devices at the gooseneck, one group is used for the lifting of the gooseneck, the other group is used for the front and rear movement of the gooseneck to facilitate disassembly, of course, there are also models with both front-end loading and rear-end hydraulic ladder loading live gooseneck semi-trailer.

Hydraulic gooseneck trailer is widely used and is the most common type of low-profile semi-trailer. The trailer truck uses a hydraulic cylinder to unload the gooseneck. When loading cargo, the hydraulics lower and raise the trailer as needed.

One benefit is that loading heavy loads from the front is safer than loading from the rear or sides. Loading from the back is unsafe, especially when handling heavy equipment. The rear section has a climbing ladder structure. Therefore, a long ladder is required to load heavy equipment. Heavy loads may fall from the ladder or fall from the rear onto the cargo platform. Such a fall can damage equipment or cargo even before transport.

What are the advantages of lowbed semi-trailer over flatbed semi-trailer?

Low bed trailers are widely used in different sectors because of their advantages over other heavy transporters. The main advantages are outlined below.

Stability

The deck of the lowboys is extremely compared to other heavy haulers. A low-lying deck means that the center of gravity is low. Hence, low bed trainers are more stable when transporting heavy cargo than trailers.

One of the ways of increasing stability is widening the base of support. This is possible with low bed trailers because the cargo plane width can be widened. The trailers remain stable on the road irrespective of the height and weight of the cargo.

Safety

Low bed trailers are specifically designed to carry heavy loads. The trailers are made of high-strength materials that can withstand pressure of up to 700mpa.

In addition, the height of the main beams can be as high as 550mm. Hence, manufacturers are assured of the safety of their equipment and products during the transportation process. Below is a picture of the heavy beams that are used to make low bed trailers:

Complying with height restrictions

Some countries have laws that restrict the height of cargo that can be transported on the road.

Low bed trailers offer companies a solution to transport extra tall equipment safely without breaking the laws.

Loading tall equipment on a trailer is often a huge challenge to transport companies.

Some types of low bed trailers allow the user to lower the rear part, which makes loading heavy cargo easier and safer.

Versatility

One reason why many companies buy low bed trailers is that they are versatile. The trailers can heavy loads and over-width cargo. In most cases, heavy machinery and equipment are extra wide.

The structure of low bed trailers enable companies to transport such wide cargo easily. Remember that trailers can handle extra tall cargo as well.

A company that handles different types of cargo does not need to buy different trailers for each category.  A low bed trailer can transport any type of goods as long as the goods are packaged appropriately.

All that transporters worry about after buying a low bed trailer is how to maintain it in good condition.
